The River District
Vision

Catalytic Opportunity Projects

These are chosen for the opportunities they possess to unite the urban fabric and their potential to stimulate additional development and investment. Focusing resources and energy on these catalytic areas will provide critical support for The River District's success.

1. Historic Jibboom Street Power Station Building

The preservation and adaptive reuse of the historic 1912 Power Station and its surrounding development will add vitality and interest to this key riverfront site. The City of Sacramento is actively working to create uses that will attract visitors, provide public access to the Sacramento River and encourage public use of Jibboom Street Park.

2. The Railyards

Under the proposed Railyards Plan, the site will be developed into a mixed-use development comprised of up to 11,085 residential units, 1,000 hotel rooms, 1.370 million square feet of retail space, 2.986 million square feet of office space, 421,700 square feet of cultural and entertainment uses and 43 acres of open space. The new pedestrian-friendly neighborhood will connect with existing districts and neighborhoods including The River District, Downtown, Old Sacramento and Alkali Flat

Key features of The Railyards will be the intermodal transportation facility and the Railroad Technology Museum. The intermodal facility will integrate retail and commercial development with transportation services while preserving the historic Southern Pacific Depot. It will provide service to passenger/commuter rail, light rail, bus service, bicycles, pedestrians, taxicabs and automobiles as well as accommodates the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) freight line service, State Railroad Museum rail car movements, and future high-speed rail. The Railroad Technology Museum will house the California State Railroad Museum's collection of historic locomotives and railroad cars, as well as formal museum exhibit galleries to interpret railroad engineering and technology. The historic and adaptive re-use will preserve the structures that best commemorate and celebrate the history and technology of California railroading.

3. Downtown/Natomas/Airport Light Rail Line

The Downtown/Natomas/Airport (DNA) Light Rail Line will support new and existing commercial and residential uses by providing a new transportation option in The River District. The proposed 13 mile, 13 station light rail transit corridor will extend from downtown to the Sacramento International Airport, with a station at the future intermodal transportation facility, and three stations in The River District. The DNA Line will be constructed in phases.

4. Project 65/Township 9

This mixed use development adjacent to the American River will create a new urban neighborhood. The proposed project includes a mix of retail and office as well as approximately 2,700 residential units. The point where North 7th and the river meet presents the opportunity to develop a neighborhood-focused public space which takes advantage of the adjacent riverfront and responds to the need for pedestrian activities. Township 9 will benefit from two significant assets, the American River Parkway and the future Light Rail extension along Richards Boulevard, and will serve as a major catalyst for area development.

5. Two Rivers Trail

The Two Rivers Trail provides a connection between the urban waterfront of historic Old Sacramento with the naturalistic American River Parkway. This project consists of two trail segments that will provide approximately 2.5 miles of paved Class I trail on the south bank of the American River in The River District
